Ideally, you should see your dentist at least twice a year. During those visits, your dentist will remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth that you toothbrush may have missed, as well check your mouth and teeth for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer and other problems. The dentist may also take x-rays to use in comparison to those taken in previous or subsequent visits to see how your mouth and teeth are changing.  While visiting your dentist twice a year is recommended, it is important to remember that every person is different, and you may need to see your dentist more often than other people depending on your situation.

Your children should have their first dental visit within six months of getting their first tooth, but before their first birthday. You should not wait until you or your child are in pain before making an appointment. In fact, your child should see the dentist before there is a problem so that the dentist can give them a regular checkup, and so that regular visits to the dentist will not be so mysterious or frightening. Adults also need regular checkups to ensure that small problems do not become big (and expensive) ones.

Aside from your regular checkups, there are other reasons you should contact your dentist. Some of those reasons include, but are not limited to the following: a cavitiy, if you or anyone in your family has had a dental trauma of some kind such as one that has result in a lost or damaged tooth; any pain that can cannot be explained by a cavity or damage; a change in the color or texture of your teeth, tongue or mouth; headaches, or aches in your jaw, persistent bad breath; and bleeding when brushing or flossing. It is also a good idea to let your dentist know if you have been diagnosed with an illness or a disease, or if you are starting a new medication. Your dentist may want to speak with your physician about potential side effects.
